During your first PRP treatment for hair growth, we’ll review your starting point and take photos of the treatment area before beginning the procedure. You’ll receive information on realistic expectations for the results, along with tips and advice to optimize the chances of success. Numerous scientific studies document the long-term benefits of PRP treatment for hair loss.

PRP Treatment (also known as the Vampire Facial)

In the first phase of PRP treatment for hair loss, blood is drawn from the patient’s arm and placed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets.

These platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are then injected into the treatment area affected by hair loss. This process releases growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells your body produces.

Collagen and elastin production also increase, helping to improve skin quality and promote hair growth. PRP therapy is used not only to combat hair loss but also for scar treatment and skin rejuvenation (see our PRP-Skin page). We apply local anesthesia to the treatment area to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible.

PRP treatment is 100% natural, contains no chemicals, and has no side effects. We specially process your own blood to harness proteins that stimulate hair growth and slow hair loss. This technique can also be applied to the skin to slow aging and stimulate new collagen production.

PRP contains growth factors and proteins that enhance blood circulation and tissue repair around the hair follicles. This stimulates the stem cells surrounding the follicles to expand and accelerate hair growth. Studies have shown that PRP treatment can improve hair loss and activate new hair growth, making it an effective method for combating hair loss.

Results

Results are usually visible a few months after the first treatment. For optimal results, most cases require 3-4 treatments spaced three to four weeks apart.

Complications

PRP treatments are completely safe, as only your body’s own material is used. PRP has no side effects, although you may experience a small bruise at the blood draw site in the crook of your arm. In some cases, a “tingling” sensation or mild itchiness may occur in the scalp during the first few hours.

It is recommended that you avoid touching or scratching your scalp in the hours following treatment to prevent bacteria from entering the area.

At your first treatment, we will review your baseline condition and photograph the treatment area before the planned start. If needed, we also examine your scalp and hair follicles with a macro camera.

You’ll be informed of the realistic expectations for your results, along with tips and advice to create the best conditions for successful outcomes.

Recommendations for PRP

There are certain nutrients, medications, and vitamins you should avoid for 2 weeks prior to your PRP treatment.

Avoid the following:
NSAIDs, including Ibuprofen and Voltaren (including gels), Vitamin E, Omega-3, ginger, and red wine.

Frequently Asked Questions about PRP Treatment at Victoriakliniken

What is PRP treatment for hair loss?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), also known as the “vampire treatment,” is a natural and effective method to combat hair loss and stimulate hair growth. By injecting your own concentrated blood plasma into the scalp, blood circulation is enhanced, and growth factors are released. This strengthens hair follicles and promotes hair growth.

Who is a suitable candidate for PRP treatment for hair loss?

PRP treatment is suitable for both men and women who experience:

  • Male hair loss: PRP can be effective in treating various stages of male hair loss, including a receding hairline and thinning at the crown.

  • Female hair loss: Women can also benefit from PRP to address hair loss or hair thinning.

  • Hair loss due to illness or stress: PRP can help stimulate hair growth following periods of hair loss caused by illness or stress.

How is a PRP treatment for hair loss performed at Victoriakliniken?

  1. Blood sample: First, a blood sample is taken from your arm.

  2. Centrifugation: The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets (thrombocytes), which contain essential growth factors.

  3. Injection: The concentrated plasma is injected into the scalp with a fine needle. We use local anesthesia to make the treatment more comfortable.

How many treatments are needed?

For optimal results, we recommend a course of 3-4 treatments, spaced 3-4 weeks apart.

When will results be visible?

The results of PRP treatment are gradual and become more visible over the weeks and months following the procedure. You can expect to see improved hair growth and a reduction in hair loss.

Are there any risks or side effects with PRP?

PRP is a safe treatment with minimal risk of side effects, as it uses your own blood plasma. You may experience mild and temporary swelling, redness, or itching in the scalp.
