About the procedure
Correcting inverted nipples is a relatively simple procedure that provides excellent results. We always recommend waiting until after breastfeeding, as nipples often naturally protrude during this time. There are also mechanical solutions, such as breast pumps, that are worth trying before deciding on surgery.
Some women experience the opposite issue, where the nipples are “too long” or thick and point slightly downward. This can also be corrected through a procedure known as “nipple reduction,” where the nipple is simply shortened or reduced in size.
Before surgery
We will discuss and explain the different ways to achieve the best result during a personal consultation with a plastic surgeon, based on your unique anatomy. The plastic surgeon will assess your nipples and provide recommendations tailored to your needs. We will go over various techniques and explain the procedure in detail, ensuring you feel informed and confident about the process.
Technique
We correct inverted nipples through a three-millimeter incision at the base of the nipple, cutting the milk ducts in the process. This means that breastfeeding will no longer be possible after the procedure. Nipple reduction in height and width is done through a horizontal excision of the skin and the removal of a small wedge-shaped section from the nipple.
During the surgery
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and you can return home the same day. It can also be combined with other surgeries, such as breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction.
After the surgery
In the first few days, you may experience some tightness and pulling at the incision sites, but the discomfort can easily be managed with mild pain relievers. We will provide all the necessary medications. A follow-up visit typically takes place after one week.
Results and Expectations
The final result will not be visible immediately. You will experience some swelling In the first 72 hours. After a few weeks, the sutures will begin to absorb. The final shape will become visible between three to six months after the surgery, and by two years, the scar tissue will have softened, giving your nipples the smooth appearance you desire.
Possible Complications
Loss of sensation
All breast surgeries can result in the breast and/or nipple becoming either overly sensitive or not sensitive enough. This change can vary in degree and may be temporary or permanent. It can affect sensation during breastfeeding or sexual response.
You may experience numbness or hypersensitivity during the healing process, and sometimes both. These sensations usually subside over time. It’s important to remember that it can take up to a year, and in some cases two, to fully regain sensation after the procedure.
Breastfeeding
If you are planning future pregnancies and breastfeeding, it’s important to discuss this thoroughly with your surgeon before undergoing the procedure. It might be best to wait, as this surgery involves cutting the milk ducts. This also means there is a risk of developing milk abscesses.
