Breast Augmentation

Today, breast augmentation using implants is one of the most common aesthetic procedures among women.

The reasons vary, but the most common is that a woman feels her breasts are disproportionate or too small compared to the rest of her body. They may also differ in size, or the breasts may have become smaller and lost their shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Breast augmentation is also performed as a reconstruction after a breast cancer surgery.

The treatment process for breast augmentation our unique 5 P’s

1. Patient selection

A plastic surgeon should guide their patients in making informed choices regarding which type of surgery is optimal. The art lies in finding a balance between the patient’s wishes, their biological characteristics, and what is technically possible.

Operating on the right patient, for the right indication—to optimize a long-term and safe result—must always be the foundation upon which all surgery is based. This naturally applies to breast surgery as well.

2. Proportionate

The golden ratio helps us choose the right technique and implants based on the patient’s proportions, measurements, and anatomical characteristics. This creates the right foundation for an optimal aesthetic result with fewer complications.

The art lies in finding a balance between the biological characteristics of the patient’s skin, breast tissue, and its properties, as well as the choice of type and shape of the implant. There is no perfect implant or size that fits all patients.

3. Planning

Every patient is unique with individual characteristics. Our task is to create a plan and guide you as a patient through the entire process. We have thousands of different implants to choose from. Our goal must always be to find the perfect implant for you. Therefore, we also use a 3D camera so that you can get a sense of how your breasts will look. A confirmation that we are doing it right is our statistics, which show that requests for a different size at the 6-month follow-up are less than 0.4%.

4. Performance

Before and on the day of the surgery, everything is conducted according to carefully planned routines regarding medical preparation, including EKG, blood sampling, Inbody testing (which measures your biological characteristics), and washing with Descutan sponges. All of this is, of course, included in the price of a breast augmentation.

On the day of the surgery, a protocol is followed to minimize operation time, nausea, and medication effects. Our anesthesiologists from Thorax at Karolinska Hospital use their cutting-edge expertise to ensure optimal anesthesia. A skillfully performed surgery is carried out with minimal bleeding and under controlled, sterile conditions according to a predetermined plan with the size and shape of the implant that the patient and surgeon have agreed upon before the operation. Therefore, we do not use drains or sizers.

5. Post-operative

Your aftercare begins right in the recovery room, where doctors and nursing staff ensure that you are doing well after the surgery. With us, you will also stay overnight, as our more than 25 years of experience have taught us that the security our patients feel when they go home after a good and restful night’s sleep with us is invaluable. This service, combined with our extensive guarantees and 10 years of follow-up with ultrasound, means that you receive a unique safety package with us that no other clinic offers.

Before Breast Augmentation Surgery

When you book your surgery with us, you will receive a detailed description of how to best prepare for your operation regarding diet, fluids, medication, exercise, blood tests, EKG, and Inbody measurements.

We practice a holistic approach regarding your health and aim to optimize the results of your surgery with these preparations. All of this is, of course, included in the price of your surgery. This way, we can also ensure that you have a safer and quicker recovery.

Implants

There are a variety of breast implants (breast prostheses) available on the market.

Victoriakliniken has carefully evaluated and chosen to work with implants from three different manufacturers. We use implants with three different surfaces: smooth, micro-textured, and polyurethane.

Implants can have different shapes, such as anatomical (teardrop-shaped) or round. Primarily, we work with two implants from Motiva.

Ergonomix 2 is a round implant from the manufacturer Motiva®. These implants are the most biocompatible implants on the market, featuring a nano-smooth surface.

This means that the risk of capsule contraction (hard breasts) is nearly non-existent (see study), which is why we do not need to use antibiotics during or after the surgery.

In addition to this, they offer a softness and elasticity that no other implant has, allowing them to be implanted through very small incisions, ranging from 2.5 cm up to 380 cc.

Anatomical CPG and round implants from Mentor with a micro-textured surface are the other implants used. These are more shape-stable implants and can therefore create a more controlled stable shape as their texturing interacts with the surrounding tissue.

The implants we use all come with a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer, meaning they will be replaced at no cost if they, for example, break.

Technique

Most women considering breast augmentation with us desire a result that looks as natural as possible. The breasts should both feel and appear natural and be proportionate to the body.

Implants
Implants are usually inserted through a 2 – 3.5 cm long incision in the natural fold under the breast. This approach results in the least complications and the least risk for the patient.

This placement makes the scars nearly impossible to see. However, we also make incisions in the armpit using the Mia Femtech technique.

This technique, which was launched in 2023, has been developed by Dr. Charles Randquist since 2015. Victoriakliniken is one of three international training clinics for Mia Femtech.

Hybrid breast augmentation

Hybrid breast augmentation is a type of breast augmentation that uses both implants and the patient’s own fat to achieve the desired size and shape of the breasts.

By using fat from the patient, the surgeon can fine-tune the volume and symmetry between the breasts to achieve an even more natural result. Almost all women, for example, have some differences in size and shape between their two breasts.

The method simply allows the plastic surgeon to tailor the breast augmentation procedure more than what has previously been possible.

The choice of method and implants is determined based on each patient’s individual circumstances and preferences. This surgery is often combined with what is known as “body sculpting.”

During the surgery

The surgery is performed under anesthesia or local anesthesia, which means you will be pain-free throughout the procedure. You will stay at Victoriakliniken for at least one night.

You can expect some swelling and tenderness after the surgery, usually under the breast, which typically peaks on the second or third day and then gradually decreases. You will be given pain relief medications to take home.

After surgery

Follow-up visits typically occur after three weeks, when you will come to us for a check-up and assessment. We recommend that you do not exercise at all during the first six weeks after your surgery.

Walking, however, is fine to do immediately after the surgery. When you begin exercising again after at least six weeks, you should avoid all activities that impact the chest muscles for three months if the implants are placed under the muscle. Additionally, “jarring” activities such as jogging and horseback riding should be avoided.

Results

The final result will not be visible immediately. During the first 72 hours, you will experience swelling. The implants have not yet “settled,” and the breast will not be fully round.

After six weeks, your sutures will begin to be absorbed, and the implants will settle. Between three to six months after the surgery, the final shape will become visible, and after two years, when your scar tissue has softened, the breasts will have achieved their final form.

Possible Complications

The following information, based on the FDA, should be considered before undergoing breast augmentation, reconstruction, or surgery following a previous breast surgery.

  • Breast augmentation with implants is not guaranteed to last a lifetime. Therefore, you may require multiple surgeries due to the need for implant replacement or complications.
  • The longer you have breast implants, the more likely you are to experience local complications, which may be cosmetically undesirable.
  • The most common complications and negative outcomes are capsule contracture. Other complications may include rupture, rippling, asymmetry, scarring, pain, and infection at the incision site.
  • There are various shapes, structures, and styles of breast implants; discuss your expectations, as well as the benefits and risks associated with breast implants, with your surgeon.
  • If you remove the implants and do not replace them, you may experience changes in your natural breasts, such as looser skin, loss of breast tissue, or other undesirable cosmetic changes.
  • As long as you have breast implants, you should attend follow-up appointments. For patients with silicone gel-filled breast implants, your doctor may recommend regular ultrasound examinations to check for ruptures or other complications. With us, you receive 10 years of follow-up included. After that, you have the option to purchase an additional 5–10 years.
  • If you notice any unusual changes in your breasts or implants, you should contact your doctor immediately.
  • There is a risk of developing a type of cancer called “breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)” in the breast or the scar tissue (capsule) surrounding the implants. BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer. Treatment for BIA-ALCL involves the removal of the implant and the capsule surrounding the implant, and some patients may require chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
  • Although it can be treated, there is a risk of death for patients diagnosed with BIA-ALCL.
  • Some patients with breast implants report a range of systemic symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, brain fog, and joint and muscle pain, which may not meet the diagnostic criteria to be classified as a disease. Patients commonly refer to these symptoms as “breast implant illness (BII).” In some cases, patients report that the removal of breast implants without replacement seems to reverse their symptoms.

Nerve loss and chronic pain
All breast surgeries can result in the breast and/or nipple becoming either overly sensitive or not sensitive enough. This change can vary in degree and may be temporary or permanent. It can affect sensation during breastfeeding or sexual response.
.

During the healing process, you may experience numbness or hypersensitivity, sometimes both. This usually resolves over time. It is important to remember that it can take several years for full sensation to return after breast augmentation.

Extreme discomfort and pain from implants are also very rare. Based on our experience, this typically occurs with larger implants, mostly on the outside of the breasts, likely due to pressure or stress on the sensory nerves.
